Good Works: Superb race benefits children with rare disease
MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010
The Middlebury health care program Superb Health LLC has an alternative perspective on wellness. Its mission is to help others live a healthier and happier life through nutrient-dense foods and proper exercise. The program encourages eating locally grown foods, keeping physically and mentally active and working for the betterment of the community.
So, it makes sense that its community fundraisers lean toward physical activity. The company sponsors the Superb Health 5k in Montpelier, a 5k run/walk for Special Olympics, and this year, the Kyle's Race 5k on May 23 at the Vergennes Union Elementary School. All who sign up at www.imsuperb.com using the promo code "Kyle'sRace" will have made a donation to the Joshua Frase Foundation and to Kyle Grant of Vergennes.
The Joshua Frase Foundation researches and provides treatment for children suffering from myotubular myopathy, a rare inherited disease with a defect in the cell structure of voluntary muscles. Affected children have diminished respiratory capacity and are often partially or totally ventilator dependent. Family-run and operated, the JFF directly works with Kyle Grant (who has MTM) and the Grant family to provide hope and a possible gateway to better health for Kyle Grant and other kids with MTM.
"I first met Kyle through my fiancee, Natalie Valente, and instantly had strong feelings for his situation," said Nick Lynch, owner, personal trainer and nutrition guide at Superb Health LLC. "Not only that, Kyle is a nice person with a heightened sense of emotions/awareness that most of us take for granted like: physical activity, breathing, eating, walking, sleeping through the night, preparing our own meals, dating, etc. There is something we can all learn from him."
